The Skin consists of the epidermis
and dermis over a fatty layer which acts as a cushion between
the outer later and the underlying bone. Skin acts as a barrier,
preventing penetration of chemicals and other toxic substances
as well as protecting against mechanical injury.
The epidermis is constantly renewed. Cells migrate to the outermost
layer, the Stratum Corneum. As these cells migrate outward,
they gradually flatten, loosen and fall away. Thus, the Stratum
Corneum is constantly renewed about every 28 days. |
